When Polaroid Originals relocated its headquarters from Berlin to Amsterdam, KUUB was approached. There was an extensive programme of requirements with many workspaces, several separate offices, a spacious canteen with luxury lunch facilities, a photo studio, showroom, boardroom, a small Polaroid museum and call rooms. The biggest challenge was therefore to create tranquillity and spatial quality despite all this.
Central wooden boardwalk
KUUB has incorporated all the special features into a central wooden 'boardwalk'. Workspaces have been created on both sides, creating a subtle separation between the different departments. This results in different, well-functioning areas while still maintaining one large space. The photo studio, the symbolic heart of the company, is centrally located in this boardwalk.
This central zone is made entirely of wood, from floor to ceiling, including the shell and the furniture volumes. This gives the area an informal and warm atmosphere, making conversations feel more intimate. The outer division walls are made of wooden slats, which form a subtle visual and acoustic separation between the different areas.
Open space
Spacious seating areas are integrated into the large spatial unit, making good use of the quality of the view: a beautiful panorama over the IJ-river. The calm and natural colours and materials of the interior, together with the concrete, steel and glass of the building, form a tasteful and warm unity.
